IBM BladeCenter S Chassis from IBM
The IBM BladeCenter S is a departure from the rest of the BladeCenter family in that it is specifically designed to be used outside of the datacenter. Acting on feedback from the small to medium size marketplace, IBM created a chassis which has similar features to the other models, but in a much more flexible and customizeable form factor. The BladeCenter S leverages the existing product portfolio of the BladeCenter family, as well as adding a few new model specific options.
One of the most unique aspects of the BladeCenter S is its onboard SAS/SATA storage capability. The chassis can accommodate up to six 3.5” hard drives in its standard storage module, and six more with an additional storage module. The disks can easily and quickly be assigned directly to blades using built-in predefined configurations or through user definable custom configurations.
Both storage modules are accessible to all blades via a single SAS connectivity module, however with the addition of a second SAS connectivity module, higher levels of availability can be achieved. When two SAS modules are present, the modules provide redundant functionality, with each module being able to access all hard drives in both storage modules. This enterprise-class redundant architecture allows for transparent data protection of all storage contained within the storage modules, and provides the ability to conduct online replacement of either module.
Another new feature introduced with the BladeCenter S is the ability to use 110V electrical power, which is of particular interest to US-based customers. Previously, all BladeCenters required 220V connections, which is readily available in most datacenters. Most small to medium size offices in the US operate on standard 110V power only, and although 220V power is available, it is typically available only at circuit breakers. To accommodate the growing diversity of office locations and facility amenities, the BladeCenter S was designed with the ability to operate on either 110V or 220V power using its autosensing power supplies.
Although the BladeCenter S has many unique features, its ultimate strength lies in its ability to use almost all of the existing BladeCenter blade servers and I/O modules. Due to this unprecedented interoperability, BladeCenter S can be configured to provide enterprise level functionality and availability in virtually any environment.
The BladeCenter S chassis allows for either six single-slot blade servers, or three double-slot blade servers. However, several different blade server models and widths can be intermixed in one chassis simultaneously to support virtually any requirement (subject to power and cooling requirements).

OpenService NerveCenter from OpenService, Inc.
NerveCenter is the industry’s leading intelligent SNMP fault management software product, complementing the device SNMP agents and network management frameworks such as HP’s OpenView and MicroMuse’s NetCool. NerveCenter increases system availability by providing proactive, scalable network monitoring, automated actions to fix problems, and real-time correlation to provide smart root cause analysis and fault storm management. In use with many global enterprises, NerveCenter’s smart correlation capabilities and unique approach make it the ideal companion product to simplify growing MicroMuse NetCool, HP OpenView, IBM Tivoli or CA UniCenter implementations.
NerveCenter specifically consists of an application server designed to manage network data and an interface to create and manage such applications. The applications work behind the scenes, feeding output to tools like OpenView or NetCool, or to ticket systems; it is not intended to act as an end-user console. Intelligent data collection, combined with finite-state correlation capabilities, allow the administrator a great deal of flexibility. The product ships with a lot of sample applications, but the real power comes when applications have been created that incorporate site-specific knowledge. Where a simple monitoring tool might, for example, report on each of fifteen servers that have become unreachable, NerveCenter might report once that an interface on a router has been taken administratively down in accordance with change ticket XXX, impeding access to fifteen servers. In large enterprises or service providers, the high-quality information results in the solution paying for itself rapidly.
